The critical care department at Kasturba Hospital is 17 bedded Multidisciplinary Intensive Care unit with admitting capacity to High Dependency Units in the hospital. Our trained faculty comprises of two associate professors, one assistant Professor, four senior and two junior residents working full time in the department and support from the department of anesthesiology with four postgraduates rotating through ICU every month. We have efficient nursing staff with 40 nurses of various seniorities working full time in the ICU. The Department has controlled documents such as policies and guidelines for smooth functioning.
Scope of the department:
We admit patients who need organ support due to critical illness
We admit patients with problems related to neurosurgery, Hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal surgery, general surgery, oro-maxillo facial surgery, and urology. We also admit patients with medical/infectious diseases, nephrology, burns/plastic surgery, and orthopedics. We take opinions from the relevant specialties wherever necessary.
Our supportive management to the organ systems include respiratory support (Mechanical Ventilation), Renal (Haemodiaysis and Haemofiltration
Patient relatives visiting times are moring 07.00 - 07.30 and evening 18.00 – 19.00. If the patient relatives wish to speak to the doctor in between these times, ICU doctor will be available.
We encourage organ donation whenever the relatives are willing for donation in a patient who suffers brainstem death.
We provide vascular access in patients with difficult venous access
We provide an emergency response team, “Code Blue”, in case of cardiac arrest anywhere in the hospital.
