Overview

The Department of Ophthalmology at Kasturba Hospital has over the years, won for itself a distinguished place in the treatment of eye-related disorders. Set up in the late 1950's, the department prospered into a center of excellence under the able leadership of Dr. P N Srinivasa Rao. Ever since its inception, the department has always been in tune with latest technological developments and has maintained international standards. It also caters to the need of the community by conducting regular eye camps and diabetic screening. In addition, it has a full-fledged “EYE BANK”.

 

TREATMENTS & PROCEDURES

 

FOLLOWING ARE THE FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN EACH SUBSPECIALITY

Cataract:
Micro-surgery for cataract like phacoemulsification with foldable IOL/ premium IOL (Toric IOL / Multifocal IOL).  
 
Paediatric Ophthalmology: facilities available

  • Paediatric cataract
  • Squint surgery 
  • Paediatric glaucoma

 

Retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatment (Monday/ Friday specialty ROP clinic) 
 

Glaucoma: Facilities available: Glaucoma Specialists available.

  • Glaucoma Detection: latest model HFA perimetry, Cirrus HD OCT 
  • Glaucoma Non-surgical treatment: Advanced Laser facility 
  • Surgical Management: Trabeculectomy, trabeculotomy, Glaucoma drainage devices/ shunt surgeries. Glaucoma clinic is held every Monday and Friday of the week.

Vitreoretinal Surgeries: Retina consultants available

Retinal Evaluation: Cirrus HD OCT, Fundus Fluorescein angiography, Fundus Camera, Video indirect

Retinal Lasers: Advanced laser system available- slit lamp delivery and indirect laser delivery system.

Retinal Surgeries: Retinal detachment surgery, intraocular foreign body removal, Diabetic vitrectomy, Endophthalmitis management, Anti VEGF injections, Steroid implants

Community diabetic retinopathy screening: Non mydriatic camera available

 

Retina Clinic is held every Wednesday & Thursday of the Week.

 

Oculoplasty and Dacryology
The lid surgeries for ectropion, entropion, ptosis and sac surgeries like dacryocystorhinostomy are done.

 

Uvea services: Specialist available

Diseases like TB/ sarcoidosis / HIV/ leptospira/ Dengue/ rickettsia/ Connective tissue diseases related eye diseases are managed.

Eye bank: Cornea specialist available
Facilities:  laminar hood, specular microscopy, slit lamp, corneal storage media (cornisol- stores up to two weeks)  
Eye bank counsellors, eye bank technician, 24 hour communication both for awareness and eye donation calls available.  
Regular Keratoplasties (corneal grafting) are performed.
